Before this race, he was barely unknown. Peter Ndolo brushed aside seasonal runners in the 5000 meters men to qualify for the national trials set for next month. Ndolo who was participating as a guest runner beat a field of experienced runners to come in second in a hotly contested race held at the Nyayo Stadium.

The 20 year old who trains on his own caught the eye of national team coach Julius Kirwa who inquired more about him.

‘I have been training on my own ever since I finished from four in 2009. I trained with armed forces for sometimes but this did not last for long because of lack of training facilities.’

The shy athlete has participated in the past three editions of the inter-provincial prison championships and last year, he emerged third in the 10000 meters.

‘I finished my high school at Mukunike High school in Kangundo and after that I decided that it was athletics that was going to put food on my table. I have been training in Ngong area and so far I am happy with my progress.’

Lack of a sponsor is hampering Ndolo’s shining star as he tries to make a mark on the national team. This was evident at the national Prison championships where he defeated many athletes who have the best facilities.

‘At the moment, I don’t have a sponsor. I depend on well-wishers who pay for me participation fes to events like this. I feel that if I can get a sponsor, I can strike to greater heights and become a world champion.’

He might have been spotted in time by national team coach Julius Kirwa who gave him a pat in the back and said that he would consider taking him to a high level training center.

‘I like your tactics, I think you just need some special training to make it to the top.’ Kirwa told Ndolo.

With such a talent in Ndolo, nothing can stop him from being a world champion if he gets the proper training.
