AFC Leopards seek a Morale boosting win

The troubled AFC leopards will be up against the equally troubled Nairobi city stars in a Kenya premier league clash on Saturday. Leopards have won only one out of their last six matches drawing one and loosing a record four. With 25 points and in a not envied position 11 on the KPL standings, the wildly followed club that has won the Kenya premier league title a record 12 times is staring right in to the eyes of relegation. More disturbing is the fact that Ingwe's quality of the game in recent premier league matches is un-admired compared to perennial rivals Gor-mahia or any other Premier league club for that matter. With just a game into his job Coach Matano complained of lack of bench power claiming that the club did a shoddy Job in recruiting players during the one month recess period. Fears are now top high amongst supporters that the trend of bad results will see the club bid good bye to the country's top flight football for the second time.

Ingwe's woes were evident when tactician Chris makokha resigned after two straight defeats to Ulinzi and to then bottom side Mahakama. His position was taken by former Sofapaka head coach Robert Matano. Matano begun on high note with a dramatic comeback from 3-1 down to beat KCB 4-3. However, that was the end of the sweet story that was to be. Ingwe has since then played to a goal less draw to Thika united, lost 4-2 to Sofapaka and lost 1-0 to sony sugar in the highly competitive Kenya premier league.

Impatient Leopards' fans are already withdrawing from the stadium with accusing fingers being pointed at a section of the club's management. leopards is on 25 points and not so impressive 11th position on KPL standings and talk is in the air with the old story of players not being paid their allowances. If all this is to go away soon and if leopards is to stay in top flight football, a morale boosting victory in their next fixture is highly desired.

Nairobi city stars will however not be the easiest place to seek that victory. The Kawangware based club has had its own share of bad times in recent matches and will want to quickly jump out of the bad times. City stars have lost thrice against sher Karuturi, mahakama and Mathare fc, won twice against Posta rangers and sony sugar and drawn once against Ulinzi stars in the last six matches they have played.

City stars is one of the most professionally managed clubs in the country with lots of young talent and if pride is anything to go by, they definitely do not like their current position on the KPL standings. Stars are placed at position 10 just above AFC leopards. Both teams have 25 points but city stars has a superior Goal difference.

The two sides met today in a friendly safaricom Katiba Golden cup and city stars showed their intent to win the KPL fixture by winning the cup. Today's match was also to serve as the KPL match but the Kenya premier league management pulled out of the arrangement after consultations with sponsors, super sport.

In the entertaining friendly match Demonde Selenge gave AFC leopards the opener in the 63rd minute converting a penalty after Bernard Mang'oli was brought down in the box. City stars equalized in the 90th minute through a screamer from 42 yards by Francis Okello to take the match to the penalties. Despite a late substitution by AFC coach Robert Matano to include Kenya international goal keeper Lawrence webo, city stars carried the day converting 3 while leopards netted 2.

Tomorrows match at the city stadium will however be a different ball game with both teams seeking to unwind the relegation chains. A win for either side will see them move up to position 7 safe from relegation while a defeat will drain the culprit further lower.
