With six out of the eight matches penned down for the fourteenth round of the 2012 KPL season having taken place this past weekend, Sofapaka went to the summit, their 2-0 away win in Muhoroni on Saturday displacing overnight leaders and reigning champions Tusker who had dislodged long term leaders AFC Leopards from the summit after beating visiting Chemelil Sugar by an identical 2-0 margin in Friday night action at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Gor Mahia and KCB played out a five goal thriller at the Nairobi City Stadium on Saturday, pocket rocket Rama Salim striking a brace to guide K'Ogallo to the 3-2 result as well as seventh place on the log. City Stars, clearly lifted by the 3-0 hiding they inficted to AFC Leopards on Saturday 5 May 2012, made it two wins on the trot and away from home, Levi Muaka's strike seeing the Kawangware based side beating hosts Western Stima at the Bukhungu Stadium, a result that sees City Stars climb further away from the relegation zone to twelfth on the KPL log. Sunday's action saw Karuturi Sports win the Naivasha flower derby, Moha Mwachiponi's goal on six minutes the difference in their fixture against Oserian. The win lifts Michael Nam's side to sixth on the log, seven points adrift of leaders Sofapaka while Michael Otinga's Oserian stayed rooted at the basement. Thika United won the battle of the Uniteds, edging out Mathare United 2-1, a result that sees them place fourth on the standings while Mathare hover precariously above the relegation zone, their eleven points seeing them just a point ahead of Ranger who currently are placed second from bottom. All this could change tonight when Rangers play Ulinzi in Monday night action at the Nyayo Stadium. Meanwhile, there is a healthy duel between Sofapaka's John Baraza and Kepha Aswani in the KPL scoring race, both are on ten goals after the weekend matches, one of the healthiest returns in recent years. Can they keep it up? Will they breach the magical 20 goal barrier like Allan Wanga did when he fired 22 goals to lead Tusker to the 2007 KPL title? N/B A low point this past weekend was the postponement of the AFC Leopards v Sony Sugar game. This game would have impacted on the complexion of the league table. It is really tragic when matters regarding team administration end up in court and games are called off. We need to find away of solving such matters without affecting leagues, competitions and most importantly players, who together with the fans are the biggest stakeholders here.
