As it had now become tradition during match days, Coach Too arrived at the school grounds as early as 10 pm to address the fans. Most students had already left for their holidays but Shianzuku still managed to pull a large fan base drawn from the locals and students from neighboring day schools. This fan address session was equivalent to pre-match press briefings in the English premier league. In his address coach Too tried to tone down the fans expectations calling the match an open one that could go either way. This might have angered the fans especially with memories of last season's defeat still fresh on their minds. For the first time in his coaching career, coach Too was booed by the fans chanting a 'we must win' and 'no victory no Too' slogans. Things had surely changed for the worst.
Multana's Achilles heel was mood swings. He was in unusually low spirits. The tension that gripped him completely withdrew his outgoing nature. At least this earned the concern of first choice goalkeeper Techane. While on their way to the dressing room Techane patted him(Multana) on the back and said “This is our game super star, you'll see!” Techane did not realize what he had just done. Multana liked being recognized. Being called a superstar by his team mate lifted his spirits. He now felt ready than ever before to get in on the act. Today he would prove to all his team mates that he deserved a spot in the team.
The team spend unusually long in the dressing room, half an hour to be precise. Coach Too was giving them a piece of his mind. Ever since Coach Too arrived as coach to Shiakanzu high school, one notable change was the team's discipline. Shiakanzu's football team was well known in the whole province not only for the beautiful sleek passing football but also for their discipline. No player in coach Too's team could dare go against his word. Five minutes late to training without a solid reason would earn you an expulsion from the team even if you were the best, like it happened to Bassett four years ago yet he is currently the number one choice left full back for the national team. While sending him out of the team, coach Too had said “Bassett, I cant keep you here! Discipline can not be sacrificed on the altar of anything, not even talent!”. Coach Too was a man of a split character. The fans and everyone on the outside world new him as a very humble man who would not hurt a fly. The players on the other hand new him as a no nonsense dictator. As the team captain Makunja would reveal, the only way to get along with coach Too was doing what he wanted. No secrets had ever leaked out of Coach Too's dressing room but rumor went round of how he could go to the extend of even slapping the few who showed some laxity in discipline.
When the players came out of the dressing room, there was a new sense of unity, with Multana feeling comfortably accepted. If the fans were shocked last year by the exclusion of Matosi from the team then they would be in for an even bigger surprise this year. To many, it was common knowledge that Multana would take Obiku's place in the team. Both were strikers, very lethal on any good day but Multana had been highly hyped by the fans. This had led to the two drifting apart with majority of the players siding with Obiku who has been with them longer than Multana. Position 9 was the natural position for both of them. Well coach Too shocked everyone, Both would start the game, Obiku would start in position 9 while Multana would assist in position 10. As usual Techane will start in goal. At the left back was Saviola right back Timo, position 4 would be played by Ernesta, and five by Mirango. The midfield would be Marshalled by Makunja the team captain in position 6, his brother Nalanda in pos 8, Tractor on the left wing in position 11 and Samora on the right wing in position 7. Shianzuku would go with the popular 4-4-2 .
The home fans were impatient. Many were skeptical about the idea of Multana being Obiku's strike partner. The 'we must win' chants swiftly changed to 'Obiku must rest'. Nothing was about to silence the fans save for realization of the might of their opponents. Inyisi, unlike Shianzuku, was yet to win any national championship but on their first appearance last year six of their players had made it to the under 19 national team. Four of these would play today. Andayi the goalkeeper was the first one. The only barrier between him and international fame was his phobia to fly. Njega the central defender had been nicknamed 'stopper' at the national championships. He was playing in position 5 today. In position 6 was Odhis, who was two weeks away from attending trials with a top European club, Odhis was an excellent and skillful dribbler. Many could not believe that football to him was an acquired taste. Coach Mambo called him the academy kid. The reason he plays football is because he used to accompany his dad to practice sessions when he was a small boy. His dad was a coach of former premier league champions, Rangers FC. The fourth one was Ngwaya the natural left footer who it seemed shaming defenders was his lifetime commitment. The rest of Inyisi's team was composed of Matano, Charlo and paxy at the back, Jerad, Benny and Tsambo completing the midfield and Shiekota being the second strike partner. For either teams, there was not going to be a walk over. Fans for both teams new that the winner of todays match was a clear favorite to make it to the National championships. |
