Harambee Stars moved back to the summit of Group A despite being held to a 0-0 draw by visitors Libya in a CECAFA Challenge match on Tuesday December 5, 2017 at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.
Stars started off the match as the better team with Duncan Otieno, Masoud Juma and George `Blackberry' Odhiambo being the dominant faces on the pitch. Libya however had the first real chance, Mohammed Tubal finding himself alone with keeper Patrick Matasi in the ninth minute but the Posta Rangers shot stopper managed to get his body on the ball's path.
Blackberry then chose to try his luck from the edge of the box four minutes later but his shot went just wide before Patillah Omoto saw his free kick punched out by keeper Azzaq Ahmed.
At the half hour mark, Ahmed Ajbara Saed became the first player to get into the referee books following a reckless tackle from the back on Masoud Juma. George Odhiambo had another chance to take Stars' ahead in the 35th minute from a corner but his effort was cleared out for another corner.
An early change was witnessed in the second half, with head coach Paul Put bringing in Kepha Aswani for Masoud Juma who had squandered several runs.
Joakins Atudo shortly after had his low free kick headed to the bottom-left corner purred out by keeper Ahmed in what was proving to be a tough evening for the hosts.
Ovellah Ochieng and Vincent Oburu were then introduced in place of Chrispin Oduor and George Odhiambo respectively, with Ovellah brightening up the match with sleek runs and crosses that failed to find a scorer.
Even though they had limited chances, Libya almost broke the deadlock in the 86th minute through Saeid Saleh who raced down the left flank and left keeper Matasi well beaten, only to see his shot stopped at goal mouth by Joakins Atudo to force the match to a 0-0 draw.
Stars however go back to the top of Group A after they were momentarily dislodged by Zanzibar who thrashed Rwanda 3-1 in an earlier match.
