Gor Mahia, can Red Berets slow down the pace?
Saturday, 28 August 2010 00:24

Gor mahia's grand march to the Kenya Premier League title is hugely expected to continue on Sunday, at least cording to the team's fans. The resurgent Red berets will however hold a different opinion. The two sides clash in their second leg of KPL at the Nyayo national stadium on Sunday at 4pm.

With the two teams being in different ends of the table, there undoubtedly is a big divide between them. A divide that could lead to a prejudgment of what the match's out come is likely to be. Also a divide that makes the match day 22 fixture a big test of character for teams who in recent matches have both proved unforgiving and ruthless hence setting up a mouth watering clash.

GOR-MAHIA
Gor mahia are in the hunt for a premier league title and the chances to gat it are looking more than real. K'ogalo are placed third on the table with a goal difference of 10 and 37 points two behind leaders SOFAPAKA and a win on Sunday will see them move top of the league(depending on the outcome of Thika vs Ulinzi) for the first time since 1995 when they won the title. A draw or a defeat might push the club with the biggest fan base down to fourth position depending on the outcome of Tusker vs Western stima fixture.

In their last three games, Gor got a draw against mathare united and two wins against Ulinzi and Western stima. In the entire league they have won 10 times lost 4 times and drawn 7 times.

Since the beginning of the second leg round of matches Gor has show cased a perfectly packaged outfit with a no non-sense defense marshaled by Erick Masika and Kenya international Julius Owino, a creative midfield with Kevin Omondi always being in the thick of the things and a highly paced striking force often featuring Kenya's George 'Blackberry' Odhiambo.

While Gor's key to winning the match will be in the pace of it's strikers.

RED-BERETS
Just like last season, Berets have suddenly awaken to fight off relegation and their fight has so far paid off. Red Berets are currently placed in an out of danger position 13 with 21 points. A win in the Sunday fixture could see them forge up to an even safer position 12 while a defeat could slump them back into the claws of relegation at position 14.

Red berets go into the match heads high having drawn twice against western stima and against Tusker and won against Chemilil sugar in their last three outings. In the entire league, Berets have won 5 matches, drawn 6 and lost 10.

The berets strongest point in the recent past has been Goal keeper Wycliffe Kisuya. Kisuya has been outstanding and has maintained a clean sheet in the last three outings and that explains why he recently received the national team calling. Beret's fans will also hope that their striking pair of Joseph Asuza and Kevin Omondi retain the form that saw their team hit 4 past Chemilil in their last weekend's premier league match.

PLAYERS

Gor-Mahia

Fredrick Onyango posted a man of the match performance last weekend to keep a clean sheet and protect his team's early 2-0 lead against posta rangers. A repeat of that will be desired to check the preying pair of Asuza nd Omondi.

Erick Masaka as has become tradition will be key to the Gor defense. The towering defender has impressed in the second leg fixtures and this should not be any different if his team is to keep moving towards the title.

Kevin Omondi has been behind most moves that have resulted in Gor-mahias goals. The kenya international though not scoring himself, is a good dribbler and holds the ball just long enough for his team mates to move into striking positions.

George 'Blackberry' Odhiambo has become a fans darling and many a times he doesn't dissapoint. Gor mahia's attacking football is hugely dependent on the pace of this boy with a magic foot.

Baldwin Ngwa has scored a goal in every of the last three games he has played and the Cameroonian import maintaining that form means K'ogalo are assured of at least a goal

Red-Berets
Having posted a great perfomance against Chemili, Tusker and Western stima, Wycliffe Kisuya will face yet another test against one of Kenya's most lethal striking force. If keeping a clean sheet is what characterizes him then stopping kevin omondi, George Odhiambo and Baldwin Ngwa will be his duty. He will however get enough help from his defence marshalled by centre back Dickson Ojwang' who has been a crucial figure in keeping the clean sheet. he men charged with winning the midfield battle for the berets will be Andrew Mayasi and Erick Ochieng. The two can win the game for their team if they successfully keep the ball away from the non-tiring Gor-mahia midfield hence cutting supply to the striking trio. Finally the responsibility to get the scores and hence the win will lie with Joseph Asuza and Kevin Omondi.
